Shining For Christ Till He Comes

Text: Matthew 5:14-16   IBCSWS   IBC 19th Anniversary 5/6/07

Preacher: Pastor Jose B. Cabajar

Light and darkness are very interesting subjects to be studied especially when it comes to their relation to human life. Light and darkness affect man's emotion and action, and we know that without light, physical existence in this planet earth is impossible. Truly, human beings extremely need sufficient amount of light in order to survive.

We cannot imagine how the world would use its well-advertised high-tech devices, high-speed transportation and communication in the absence of light-producing power from our solar system. Pondering such thoughts helps us realize the importance of light – that without it, it would be hard for us to do anything and even impossible for us to live. Life and light co-exist.

In spiritual realm, God is the True Light and without Him, there is no life. He who rejects Him will surely live in darkness. In John 1:9-11, it is written, That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. (KJV) These verses imply that we are living in a Christ-rejecting world and Truth is really needed to be proclaimed consistently so people may come to know the Savior of the World which is Christ the Lord.

Shining for Christ till He comes should be the concern of true believers in our time. It is so sad, but true, that many professing Christians are not really shining because their hearts are more inclined to the world more than the Word.  In Matthew 5:16, it is written, Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (KJV) This passage reminds us that God wants the world to see Christ in the believers' lives.

Shining for Christ till He comes is not only an exciting goal, but also a rewarding task. While the wickedness of this world becomes greater, believers must shine more and more for the Lord. We believe that the more a Christian loves Jesus, the more he will understand his vital role in this darkened world, and the more he will shine for Lord.

(I)            The Role Of Christians In This Darkened World

Matthew 5:14-15    Philippians 2:15-16

-Its clarity

Lack of clarity brings forth confusion and that will exactly happen if Christians become indifferent toward their role in this darkened world. The lost will not find their way to the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ if the needed light is not displayed appropriately. In Matthew 5:14, Jesus said, "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid." (KJV) The believers' mission in this lost and dying world is to shine for the Truth until the Lord comes and we must realize that the clarity of such task is a "must-see" in every believers' life.

-Its visibility

In Matthew 5:15, it is written, Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. (KJV) The visible presence of believers in this crooked world is truly important. Through the power of the Holy Ghost, Christians have the power to influence others for good. True believers have the capacity to overcome evil and to spread the Gospel to every nation, but they need to become visible and consistent in their goal to reach out more souls for Christ.

A Local Church with members who have negative attitude toward church attendance, Bible principles, Biblical giving, praying and soul winning will never shine as they ought to because they are not willing to do what is right and pleasing in the sight of God. As a result, its presence in the place will have no significant impact.

On the other hand, believers who are active and faithful in supporting their Local Church activities will create an inspiring image for Christianity and a strong spiritual impact on the lives of people who are watching them. Believers must love, support, protect and strengthen their Local Church so they could shine brightly for the Lord in a historic way.

(II)          The Wonderful Results Of Shining For Christ

Matthew 5:16

-Many will be blessed

 Titus 3:5-8, 14

Apparently, the world is in spiritual darkness and the lost are crying for light. The devil is doing his best to hinder them from knowing the Truth. If Christians care less and do not do anything to reach them with the Gospel of Christ, then those neglected souls will die and go to hell. In such heart-breaking situation, the purpose of believers to shine is defeated. We must bear in mind that God wants believers to shine for Him and be a blessing to others.

In Titus 3:8, it is written, This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. (KJV) Shining for Christ is undoubtedly beneficial to others. True Christians should shine consistently so they may become a blessing to people around them who need the Lord. What a great honor for a Christian to have that privilege to lead lost souls to the saving knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Truly, soul winners are wonderful blessing from God.

-Our Heavenly Father will be glorified

  I Peter 2:11-12

In Matthew 5:16, it is written, Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (KJV) This reminder is for Christians to take heed. Good works of believers must not be hid, nor hindered because they are intended for the glory of God.

Our time here on earth is so short and full of uncertainties. We are just passing through, and that is simply the reason why we must shine more for the Lord so the world may see our good works before we depart and go to our heavenly home prepared by God. And God will be glorified. In I Peter 2:11-12, it is written, Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. (KJV)

As we see how crooked the ways of the world are, may we pray for one another for spiritual strength and wisdom so we may stand the test of time and fulfill the blessed will of God for our lives. In Philippians 2:15-16, it is written, That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain. (KJV)

Keep on shining for Christ till He comes! Serve Him faithfully without murmuring and wait patiently for His coming. Do your best for the Lord! Let His Holy Name be glorified through your good works. Keep on singing "To God be the glory great things He has done" and be a blessing to others.
