Spiritual And God-glorifying Music

Text: Ephesians 5:18-20   IBCSS   May 24, 2009

Preacher: Pastor Jose B. Cabajar

Music is a strong and yet stylish means of conveying one's message to others. Its influencing potency cannot be underestimated and its well-expressed styles contribute appeal to man's body, soul and spirit. Music is a Medium Uniquely Synchronized In Communication. Its effectiveness in instilling one's philosophy cannot be belittled especially to the mind of younger generation.

Many may not be aware, but music is a powerful weapon that has the capability to capture one's heart, to redirect one's way of thinking, and even liberate one's troubled soul. It works inwardly then surfaces with various results through one's speech, action and inclination. Music is a well-designed vehicle to transport people to a desired turning point in life.

Music is a wonderful language of the whole universe. In Job 38:4-6, it is written, 4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. 5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? 6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; 7  When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? (KJV) A careful study of these passages will surely widen our understanding about music and its interesting profundity.

Understanding spiritual and godly music will surely lead us to a Spirit-led music ministry in our Local Church. It is sadly true that many professing Christians are already victims of worldly and confusing music because they have been deceived by the liberal modernist position of the ecumenical movement. We don't need to be a Conservatory of Music graduate to know what kind of music we should use in our Church today because we have the Bible to guide us in every decision we make for the music ministry of our Local Church.

As we go through in our study about spiritual and godly music, may we listen carefully to the message of the Holy Ghost so we may do what is right and pleasing before our Almighty God. We should not let the purpose of our music ministry be defeated, but do our best to fulfil its intended role in demonstrating the way of Truth.

(I)  The Presence Of The Holy Ghost

     Ephesians 5:18

The presence of the Holy Ghost is vitally needed in the music ministry and in every ministry of the Church. Its absence will surely affect the solemnity and spirituality of any Christian activity. In Ephesians 5:18, it is written, And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; (KJV)

-The controlling power of the Holy Ghost

Musicians who are under the control of the Holy Ghost are delightful to God. They play not merely as musicians, but as worshippers whose hearts are deeply in tune and in communion with God. The spiritual impact of the music they produce will be notable because of the mighty working of the Holy Ghost in their lives.

Orderliness is an excellent sign of good music. We may not have the complete knowledge and familiarity about the needed elements of good music, but we strongly believe that if we walk in the fear of the Lord and posses spiritual discernment from God, we will have the sensitivity to detect what is good and bad music. It is a foolish decision to let the appearance of worldliness come in a blood-bought and blood-washed congregation of the Lord Jesus Christ, which is the Holy One.

Apparently, contemporary music produced by questionable composers, sang and played by questionable singers and musicians are creeping in unnoticed in many Churches nowadays. True believers must be extra careful in choosing the kind of music for their ministry. Worldly music has seducing spirit, and if we are not careful enough, the sad consequences of our spiritual blunders today may lead our children to shameful spiritual downfall tomorrow.

(II) Its Godly Purpose

     Ephesians 5:19-20

Godly music has a godly purpose, that is, to give glory to God. Worldly music, on the other hand, has an evil role in this materialistic and truth-rejecting generation. Hence, Christians must be fully aware of its purpose.

-Edifying others

Our music should be for edification. It should not activate the old man, but strengthen the new man in Christ. It should not lead others to fleshly activity, but sanctify believers for the Master's use. Godly music prepares the heart of man to be drawn closer to God. In Ephesians 5:19, it is written, Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; (KJV) Don't embrace worldly music - it will lead you away from the Word. Let godly music fill your heart with joy, peace and truth.

-Expressing one's heart unto the Lord

Awareness of the goodness of the Lord will lead us to sing godly songs and to play proper musical instruments for the Lord. Pouring our hearts unto the Lord will keep us spiritually healthy and strong. In Psalm 104:33-34, it is written, 33 I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. 34 My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD. (KJV)

-Giving thanks unto the Lord

A thankful person will never be forgotten by God. Get involved in spiritual and godly music and in giving thanks unto God. Ephesians 5:20 says, Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; (KJV)

(III) Should Not Be Associated With Worldliness

         Exodus 32:6, 17-19   (Daniel 3:4-7) Matthew 14:6-11

-God-glorifying music is always associated with God's

Spiritual and God-glorifying music can never be associated with idleness, drunkenness, idolatry, dancing, nakedness, immorality and other faces of evil. Rather it is associated with truth and holy living. In Revelation 15:2-4, it is written, 2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. 3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. 4 Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest. (KJV) What a glimpse of the blessed future! What a blessed music to hear! May we not neglect to sing with reverence the song "Holy, Holy, Holy" because it reminds us of our Holy God.

(IV) Has Power To Drive Away Evil

     I Samuel 16:14-23

-Must be played by Spirit-filled believer

We have been hearing hair-raising stories about demon possession and disturbing presence of evil spirits in certain places and such reports are evidences of destructive activities of the devil in this evil-infested world. Whatever activity they have in our times, Christians must not be intimidated by such disturbing appearances, but be praying constantly and trusting the Lord at all times. The Holy Spirit indwells the believer and we are assured that He will never leave us especially in times of danger. Be strong in the Lord and remember I John 4:4 which says, Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. (KJV)

Be reminded that spiritual and godly music is so powerful that even evil spirits can be driven away when such music is played by Spirit-filled believers. In I Samuel 16:23, it is written, And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him. (KJV) What a powerful working of God through a life of a godly musician.

Christians must be aware what music can do for them in times of fear. Evidently, godly music drives fear away. For instance, when we're left alone in an eerie place and feel somewhat troubled and fearful, and we sing "There Is Power In The Blood", somehow, our fear vanishes away and we feel the saving presence and comfort of our loving God.

                            (V)  It Touches The Heart Of God

   II Chronicles 20:20-23

-It unleashes the power of God

Godly music does not only touch the hearts of truth-seeking people, but also the heart of God. In II Chronicles 20:22-24, the Bible says, 22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. 23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another. 24 And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped. (KJV) This Bible account wonderfully demonstrates the saving-power of godly music during critical times.

Spiritual and God-glorifying music is the kind of music we really need in our Christian life. It is a sanctifying music. It is a powerful tool in conveying the Gospel of Christ, and at the same time, a powerful weapon against the increasing presence of evil. We must keep on encouraging God-fearing people to stay firm with the kind of music that God has created for us to enjoy, share and use in glorifying the Holy Name of our Almighty God.
