Understanding What True Love Really Is

Text: I John 3:16      IBCWPM     February 13, 2008

Preacher: Pastor Jose B. Cabajar

Love is a very interesting subject and people love to talk about it openly with excitement. Obviously, each person has his or her own personal definition of love, and often times, it is an expression of one's knowledge and understanding of the said topic.

In this world of "love-seeking but not love-giving people", the word love should be carefully defined through the help of the Word of God so people may truly understand the true essence of love. Pondering I Corinthians 13:1-13 in our heart will help us to realize what true love really is.

It is sadly true that many people today could hardly differentiate love from lust distinctively. For such reason, true Christians must not only teach others about the kinds of love, but also dramatize the highest kind of love, which is "agape love".

A deep understanding of true love will surely lead us to appreciate what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for us at Calvary.

(I)            Exemplified Perfectly By The Lord Jesus Christ

I John 3:16

-With sacrificial act

True love produces sacrificial acts. In I John 3:16, it is written, Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. (KJV)

-With beneficial results

Christ loved us, and undeniably, we are enjoying the favorable results of His boundless love. Great salvation and countless blessings from above are beneficial results of Christ's perfect love.

-With God-glorifying outcome

When Christ displayed His love at Calvary, the devil was displeased and terrified, but God was well-pleased and glorified.

(II)    True Love Should Be Expressed Through Believers' Giving

I John 3:16

…and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

The phrase "to lay down our lives" reminds us how we ought to give what we have to others in a "Christ-like" fashion.

Giving our quality time to others through spreading the Word of Truth and believer-strengthening activities is an excellent manifestation of true love. We must keep in mind that the way we spend our time with other people reveals what kind of life and love we have.

Praying for others is one way of revealing to God our love for others. If we really love our brethren, we should pray for them.

The labor of love we extend to others exhibits our deep expression of our caring heart. True love never gets tired but always looks for ways to help.

Sharing our substance to others for the glory of God is a rewarding practice. God, who is the Author of love and giving, will never forget anyone who shares his blessings to others. Surely, God will reward him in an unbelievable way.

True love is pure and without guile. It is not self-centered but rather God-centered and edifying. As we live to serve and shine for the Lord Jesus Christ, may the love of God be demonstrated through our lives so people of this darkened world may see and understand what true love really is.
