Walk As Children Of Light
Text: Ephesians 5:8-17 IBCSS October 28, 2007
Preacher: Pastor Jose B. Cabajar
Christians are obviously associated with Jesus, which is the True Light, and it is only proper for believers to walk as children of light. Christians are privileged people because of their special relationship with God through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. It's truly an honor to serve and shine for Christ.
We cannot imagine how tragic our lives would have been had the Lord become unmindful of us; but praise God for His mindfulness and great love that He took us out of darkness and brought us into Light. In Ephesians 5:8-9, it is written, For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) (KJV) Praise God for setting us free from the bondage of sin and for giving us an opportunity to walk as children of light under the banner of Truth.
As the world continues to shape its truth-rejecting inhabitants, true Christians should not get involved with the works of darkness, but rather stay faithful in the Lord, edify themselves and do what is right and pleasing in the sight of God. In Ephesians 5:7, it says, Be not ye therefore partakers with them. (KJV) Christians must separate themselves from worldly activities and stand firm to Biblical conviction and live by it.
The Bible tells us that perilous times shall come and wickedness shall abound, and for this reason, Christian homes must fortify their members even now before they will be caught unaware by the devastating impact of people's wickedness in the future.
We must keep in mind that a Local Church has a great role in molding the believers' lives unto Christ-likeness and underestimating such important role will lead believers to spiritual deterioration. It's time to make commitment to holy living and to strengthen our Christian life so we may have the power to resist the enticement of the world. It should be our burning desire to walk as children of light, and truly, the Lord will be delighted.
(I) Prove What Is Acceptable Unto The Lord
-Stand for the Truth
Those who faithfully stand for the Truth will experience the sufficient grace of God. They will not hesitate to give their lives for the sake of Truth. Their sacrificial and heroic acts will be rewarded by God and their inspiring lives will surely lead others to the saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. Stand for the Truth and God will be glorified.
-Don't compromise with the world
Professing Christians who degrade their faith and practices by compromising with the world are not spiritually intelligent. They are more interested in the works of the old man than in the desire of the new man in Christ. True Christians must guard themselves from the deceitful ways of the world. Every person redeemed by the blood of Christ must prove what is acceptable before God.
In Ephesians 5:10, it says, Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. (KJV) Christian should not only prove what is right, but also reprove what is wrong, as stated in verse 11, And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. (KJV)
-Don't be a man pleaser
A man pleaser can never please all men not even himself. His foolishness will lead him to self-destruction, and consequently, he will lose his face and end up humiliated.
-Be pleasing to God
Do what is right and be pleasing to God. Live by faith and the Lord will be delighted. Keep on pleasing God and enjoy His loving-favor.
(II) Be Wise
Fear the Lord and walk cautiously and the Lord will lead you in the path of wisdom. In Ephesians 5:15, it is written, See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, (KJV) Christians should avoid foolishness, vanity and pride because such things could hinder spiritual maturity and productiveness.
-Use your time wisely
Time is a precious gift of God and therefore should be used wisely and carefully. Wise use of time shows good stewardship. Christians should not spend their time in nonessential activities which could derail them from the path of truth. God wants His children to be wise and spiritually rich. A well-lived life is an excellent result of a well-spent time. In Ephesians 5:16, it is written, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. (KJV) Souls are dying and going to hell. Give them your time and reach them with the Gospel so they may be saved and live a God-pleasing life.
-Understand the will of God
Understanding the will of God makes us aware of our God-given role in this present world. A Christian who does not understand the will of God for His life will become stagnant in his spiritual growth. In Ephesians 5:17, it says, Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. (KJV) Pray for the will of God and ask Him for understanding and it will surely help you to fulfill His blessed plan for your life.
(III) Be Filled With The Spirit
-Get involved in spiritual activities
Be filled with the Spirit and get involved in spiritual activities. Deep involvement in spiritual things shows submission to the control of the Holy Spirit in your life.
In Ephesians 5:18-19, it is written, And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; (KJV) A man who is drunk and under the control of the spirit of wine usually talks much, does strange flesh-related things and becomes unruly. On the other hand, a believer who is controlled by the Holy Spirit will surely get excited in God-glorifying activities because God is the one influencing his life. Be filled with the Holy Spirit and do things that are pleasing to God.
-Be thankful to God
Be thankful to God and He will be delighted. Thankfulness is a joyful expression of one's thoughtfulness toward God's loving-grace. In Ephesians 5:20, it is written, Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; (KJV) God is worthy to be praised and to be thanked for.
-Live in the fear of the Lord
In Ephesians 5:21, it says, Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. (KJV) Behind Christian integrity is fear of the Lord. The more we respect God and His Word, the more we become sensitive toward the things He wants us to do and the things He wants us to avoid.
In Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, it is written, Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. (KJV) These passages are excellent reminders for us to take heed so we may not forget our primary duty in this sin-darkened world.
May our lives become guiding lights that would lead lost souls to Christ. Walk as children of light and be a blessing to others.
